Noir Absolu

The blend
Noir Absolu started as a question: how dark can a fragrance get before it stops being wearable? The answer, it turns out, is a shade past most people expect.
It opens sharp — saffron and a squeeze of bergamot, bright for about a minute — and then falls into oud, rose and leather that stay close to the skin for the rest of the day. There is smoke in it, but it is smoke from a distance, not from a bonfire.
Twenty-two percent concentration means a little goes a long way. Two sprays are a statement. Four is a decision.

What it smells like
Three stages, in the order you meet them.
Top notes
First 10 minutes
What hits you when you spray. Light molecules, gone quickly.
Saffron
Warm and slightly bitter, like the first second of a spice tin opening.
Bergamot
A quick citrus lift so the opening does not feel heavy straight away.
Pink Pepper
A dry sparkle at the top — sharp but never sour.
Heart notes
20 minutes to 3 hours
The actual personality of the fragrance. This is what it is.
Oud
The centre of the scent. Dense, resinous wood that smells expensive because it is.
Turkish Rose
Not a pretty rose — a dark, jammy one that keeps the oud from turning harsh.
Nutmeg
A rounded warmth sitting just underneath the rose.
Base notes
3 hours until it fades
Heavy molecules that cling to skin. Still there tomorrow morning.
Leather
Smooth and worn-in, like the inside of a good jacket.
Amber
The glow that holds everything together as it dries down.
Vetiver
Dry roots and earth. This is what is still there at midnight.
How it wears
- Longevity
- 10–12 hours on skin, longer on fabric
- Sillage — how far it travels

Three people asked in one evening
Wore it to a wedding and had three separate people ask what I was wearing. Two sprays lasted from 7pm until I woke up the next morning and could still smell it on the collar.

Not just for men
Bought it for my husband and then kept using it myself. The rose underneath the oud is what makes it work on me. Ordered a second bottle so we stop fighting over it.

Strong — go easy
Genuinely excellent but be careful, this is not a four-spray fragrance. I did that once and regretted it in the car. Two on the chest is perfect.
