Eau de Parfum, Extrait, and what you are actually paying for

Every fragrance is perfume oil dissolved in alcohol. The only thing that separates an Eau de Toilette from an Extrait de Parfum is the ratio.

Eau de Toilette sits around 8–12% oil. Eau de Parfum is roughly 15–18%. Extrait de Parfum starts at 20% and can go past 30%. Kavé's two extraits — Noir Absolu and Fleur de Nuit — sit at 22%.

More oil does two things. It makes the fragrance last longer, obviously. Less obviously, it changes the shape of the scent: with less alcohol carrying it, the fragrance sits closer to your skin and unfolds more slowly. An extrait is not a louder version of an EDP. It is a slower one.

This is also why extraits cost more per millilitre and why you need fewer sprays. A 50 ml extrait will outlast a 50 ml eau de toilette by a wide margin.
